In 1638 the Northumberland Trained Bands gave no account of their strength. It was proposed that the City of Newcastle should raise 400 foot, 200 each of musketeers and pikemen, and the County should raise 500 foot, 250 each of musketeers and pikemen, as well as 100 harquebusiers.
In April 1639 4 companies from Northumberland joined the Earl of Essex to garrison Berwick.
