The Berkshire Trained Bands of 1638 consisted of 1100 men armed with 680 muskets and 420 corslets (body armour, signifying pikemen). They also mustered 90 horse consisting of 59 cuirassiers and 31 harquebusiers.

In August 1651 the Berkshire militia were ordered to rendezvous at Oxford.
