 +Fenton was the brother in law of the 1st Earl of Cork and thus part of a network generally opposed to Inchiquin. He acted as a commissioner for overseeing arangements for the 1644 Cessation. In a letter of August 1647 Viscount Valentia described him as one "who hath long taken the pay of a colonel but was never known to fight"​.((HMC Egmont MSS vol1 p442)) While Sir Percy Smith claimed he abandoned him during the siege of Youghall.((HMC Egmont MSS vol1 p330)) ​
