Notable Officers

Sir William Constable

Sir William Constable was MP for Knaresborough and brother-in-law of Lord Fairfax. In 1645 he resigned his commission due to the Self-Denying Ordinance.

Officer List

  • Major William Goodrick (Led regiment in Cheshire)
  • Captain Simon Askwith (18/02/45 - 24/06/45 Served previously under Sir Thomas Fairfax and after under Colonel Christopher Copley. There seems to be some confusion over the date of the transfer to Constables' regiment. The troop appears to have been with Constable by 18/02/45 when it was mustered at Keighley, presumably on the way to Cheshire. However Askwith's full pay claim2) dates it from 10/04/45, while a separate account gives him as in Fairfax's regt until the transfer to Copley.3) )
  • Captain Francis Swaine (22/05/44-24/06/45. On 24th July 1644 the troop comprised 7 officers and 41 troopers.)4)
  • Captain Robert Sharpe (in Cheshire)
  • Captain? Mathew Pearson (in Cheshire)
  • Captain? [ ] Caunday (in Cheshire)
  • Captain? William Nash (in Cheshire)

  • Estimated 300 at Kilham and Driffield
