John Gifford

A professional soldier from Darlington, he served as Major to Colonel Francis Hammond’s Regiment of Foot in the Bishops' Wars. He was Major General of Lord Fairfax's Northern Army from 1642, but was suspected of disloyalty during the second siege of Hull and arrested on 3rd October 1643.
