Notes

A history of the unit is shown in Edward M. Furgol’s A Regimental History of the Covenanting Armies 1639-1651 Edinburgh, 1990. ISBN 0 85976 194 0

Perhaps not properly regimented in 1639, Furgol labels them a ‘retinue’.

Coats, Flags and Equipment

What appears to be the Colonel’s flag, captured at Dunbar, is white with a silver bear and the motto GRACE ME GVID as well as the usual Covenant related inscription in black, much damaged. Other flags are green with a yellow saltire and some have distinctions; cherubims, tree and table; a stag’s head; a cost of arms. Various versions of the Covenant inscriptions are carried, potentially dating back to the various Forbeses’ regiments of the First Civil War.1)
