Irish Royalist foot reinforcing the defenders of Drogheda

Service History

1649

  • August: Garrison of Trim
  • September: Kavanagh reinforces Drogheda with 500 foot
  • September: Besieged at Drogheda
  • September: Massacred at Drogheda

Notes

Lt Col Kavanagh's detachment was likely taken from one of the regiments of Ormonde's army, possibly Sir James Dillon’s Regiment of Foot or the Earl of Westmeath’s Regiment of Foot, which Cromwell thought were each around 200 strong at Drogheda, but were not mentioned in the Royalist muster of late August. Needs clarification.
